No such thing as destiny

Hi guys, I'm trying my best to stay consistent now. One post per week maybe. Enjoy this week's edition.

This just occurred to me out of the blue. Do I believe in destiny?. Ask me this some 10 minutes before that thought flashed in my mind and I'd have said yes. 100%. But now I beg to differ. Destiny means that every single person is going to be one particular way and nothing they do will ever change it. I think that's too rigid now. That somewhat tosses "freewill" out the window.

From watching "The Flash" and being generally fascinated about time travel I've learnt that 1. The future is either fixed and no matter what we do or not do won't affect it, it'll always just be. And 2. That we all have an infinite amount of choices that'll lead to an infinite amount of outcomes which somehow defeats the idea of destiny. I go with option 2 though.

I really think that our "destinies" are just our decisions. Those things make or mar us. I was discussing this with one of my friends recently and he cited an example of Jesus. Jesus was sent to the world to die for the sins of humanity and reconcile us back to God. Now the devil (one of the smartest beings in the universe in his own right), tried to tempt him and make him give up the task for "riches of the world". I think if there was destiny the devil should have known that no matter what he did the future is fixed and won't even bother testing the Almighty. But somehow I feel he knows our decisions could change it all and is working overtime trying to help us make the worst ones.

During this lock down I got to reading more books and I realised most successful people, always give credit to "luck"(I'd like to call it God Working overtime), they'd always use "if" and not "when" as if they knew 1 decision different and they'd be working 2 shifts to make ends meet.

The sheer thought of destinies feels so unfair. You mean some people do not get a fighting chance?. Their lives wind up bad cause it was designed that way?, come on now!.

Concluding I'd say maybe there's a destiny, a default "happy ending"(cause God is good) for everyone at the end of the road. But then some good decision, good friends, good coincidences or lack thereof could act as catalysts or totally steer one off the happy ending respectively. Eitherways I doubt that everyone has a particular end that their action or inaction can't change.

What do you think?.

  2. Intriguing! This suits the Nigerian clichē" what will be will be". Yorubas will also tell you "kadara o gbogun, Ori lelejo". May Almighty direct our steps and lead us to the right path
